How to prepare a website design brief
Set out your audience, content and practical requirements before choosing a visual direction.
Describe the people using the site
Explain who will visit, what they already know and what they need to decide. A service business may need to explain its process before inviting an enquiry. A shop needs clear product information and a buying journey. List the most important visitor tasks so design decisions can support them.
Gather content and requirements
Prepare a page list, approved brand assets, photographs and any existing copy. Note which content still needs to be created. Describe forms, languages, booking needs or store features separately from visual preferences. If you share reference sites, explain the specific elements you like instead of asking for a complete copy.
Plan ownership after launch
Agree who will review designs, supply missing information and maintain the website. Ask how routine content updates will work. Include checks for small screens and the steps visitors take to contact you. A useful brief makes decisions easier throughout the project, including the less visible work that keeps the website usable after launch.
